“Yo, I’ll tell you what I want
What I really, really want
So tell me what you want
What you really, really want” etc….
There’s no denying the Spice Girls made impact in the 90s – whether you loved their music and stance of girl power or not, it’s pretty obvious how successful they were.
The phrasing above in their most famous and first hit single “Wannabe” really reminded me of a number of client conversations I’ve had this week.
“I just don’t know what I want”
“I can’t seem to work out what I want”
“I just wish I was clear about what I really want….”
It’s a trap to fall into this kind of thinking (and one that I know I’ve had to navigate my own way out of at times) unless you take an extra step.
Because, when you get very clear about what you don’t want it starts to point you in the direction of what you do want.
So actually, it’s very useful, but only if you allow yourself time to think along the lines of “Okay if I don’t want that what do I want instead?”
That’s the magic 💫 question to ask yourself…or anyone in your orbit who’s sounding off about what they don’t want.
- I don’t want to work such long hours that translates into I want my hours to be more manageable
- I don’t want to work in the office, five days a week and be exhausted all the time that translates into I want to work from home at least two days a week and manage my energy more efficiently
- I don’t want to work in such a cutthroat environment that translates into I want to work in a more collaborative and friendly environment.
It may sound simplistic but it’s not.
Most people don’t ask the question to direct themselves more easily to what they do want.
I really encourage you to consider all the things you don’t want and maybe list them out, especially as we approach 2024 in the not too distant future!
When you start to identify what you don’t want, what you really really don’t want, it will start guiding you to what you do really really want.
A final word on the matter…
