Friends and Family

I don’t know if we’d be friends if we weren’t sisters because we’re so different?” was something my sister said to me whilst we were on holiday last week.  She didn’t mean it in a nasty way, more in a pensive and wondering kind of way.

Thinking about it as we chatted, we both realised that our history, our upbringing, our ability to finish each other’s sentences is such a special thing to have in your life.

Our lives are so different and we’ve gone in different directions through choices and unavoidable situations but at the root of it all, we’re similar in so many ways.

And I know not everyone does do they?

Not everyone actually has a sibling and, if they do, they don’t always get on or stay in touch…

We flew to Crete to stay in a hotel to celebrate my birthday, sharing time with my sister and her man both at the hotel and in their lovely home out there.

How special it was.

I’m not saying this to impress you in any way but more to encourage you to consider your own family relations and connections.

Like friendships, it takes effort and commitment to say close doesn’t it?

You don’t have to live in each other’s metaphorical pockets but sharing thoughts, making time, keeping each other in the loop has been so important since my sister moved to Crete last year.

There’s that well-used phrase

You can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family“.

Well, whilst it’s true of course, just like family sometimes your friendships fade or you change and shift and move away physically and mentally.

And, sometimes you don’t.

As someone who has a small but very tight group of true friends, my sister is most definitely part of that and holidaying with her and Nick really made me realise that even more.  And I would choose her  – and him!

Oh and Snowy gets on so well with Nick which, of course is a bonus…

In other news…

=================

My birthday was so lovely to share with Snowy and my sister & Nick.  I never take it for granted and having had many trips around the sun, getting older too is something which is very precious.  It’s not a given that we get older and I am embracing my grey hairs (with some help from my hairdresser 😉) and laughter lines 😂!
