Maisie had watched the Amy Cuddy TED “Presence” talk and really took on the need to slow herself down and to be more present during the interview process.
It’s a brilliant talk and I encourage you to watch it yourself…
Having been put forward for a role that she ultimately didn’t get, she was really conscious during the round of interviews for another role of really preparing herself and not getting flustered .
Maisie had a tendency to speak quickly as soon as she’s been asked something. It was a trait she knew she wanted to change in work-related circumstances.
Each time she was preparing for an interview or a meeting during the process Maisie did her Wonder Woman pose.
She took time in the bathrooms, in the reception, in a coffee shop near by, or walking to the meeting to stand straighter, put her shoulders back, focussed on her breathing, and had her hands firmly on her hips, legs apart. Clearly this isn’t for the interview!
Each time she did it she knew it made a difference to her delivery and how she was able to ask questions rather than just respond. She became an active, more equal participant rather than a grateful, slightly breathless candidate.
Despite it being a marathon rather than a sprint process, Maisie was appointed to the role she really wanted. She explained a large part of her secret was being more grounded and less anxious. It came down to the physical preparation just as much as the mental.
So many people say to me “Oh yes Kay, I’ve heard of the wonder woman pose” or “power posing”. And I will always say “Yes, and do you actually do it?”.
The pose actually increases the testosterone in our bodies and reduces the ‘fight or flight’ cortisol which can give us brain fog. It’s something I have been doing, and still do, for years now.
See below! I’ll be doing it on Wednesday next week for sure….
Or in someone else’s words…again…

And in other news…

Next Wednesday, 27th November I’m hosting an event on behalf of the Livery Company I’m part of. The Worshipful Company of Insurers. It’s called YOUR Year End Review and I’m guiding the participants through a process I’ve used for years to set myself and my clients up for success in the year to come.
Reviewing the year just finishing (2024) tells you so much and it’s easy to skip over. Here are the details if you’d like to join us! It’s live and in person and includes drinking and nibbles. What’s not to love?!
